Revitalization of the mills

The revitalization of the monastery mills

The mills of Rumbeck Monastery have been forgotten. Of course, you can't see anything. That's changing.

The location of Grain mill and sawmill was shrouded in mystery until a more detailed analysis of a cadastral map from 1827 provided decisive clues. This cadastral map contained more details than the original Prussian survey.

After a thorough inspection of a farm building, it was clearly proven that today's "quarry stone barn" was the building of the original Grain mill (Building 18) (cf. "Monastery complex at a glance "). The gable wall only shows on the inside that there is a cart-wide gate, a pedestrian door and three windows. Unfortunately, this cannot be seen from the street due to the porch added in the 1950s.

On the other side of the associated moat, a building is recorded that extends to the street at a distance of 4 meters and slightly offset. For us it is clear: this was the sawmill (Building 19).

Jochem Ottersbach has staged the building constellation at that time in such a way that we can imagine it. We thank him very much for his helpful work.

We are working on making this building ensemble clearly visible again on site. The installation of the mill wheel is the first major action to clarify the history:

And this is how the construction work went:

The foundations of the sawmill are shown:
